The affair had constituted sexual encounters on 9 occasions November 1995 – March 1997.

Monica Lewinsky was a 22 year old White House intern at the time of the affair, and US President Bill Clinton was more than twice her age at 52.

Rumours of the scandal had been circulating since January of that year, and Clinton had denied the sexual encounter under oath. When the allegations were proven to be accurate, Clinton was charged with perjury and fined $90,000 for giving false testimony. There was also a call for impeachment, however a majority of Representatives voted to acquit him of all charges and Clinton remained in power.
