The Best Live TV Bust Ups and BloopersBy Premier
Both in reality and in fiction, news reporters are known for their off camera rants and hijinks. Whether it’s Bill O’Reilly, or Will McAvoy from The Newsroom, it seems that regardless of what chaos might be happening around them, news readers and reporters manage to be calm and collected as soon as the camera rolls. Except for when they don’t.
In celebration of The Newsroom: The Complete First Season releasing on Blu-ray and DVD we take a look at the best of the worst TV bloopers.
This is probably one of worst first days of work anyone has ever had. After only a few seconds on air, Clemente let slip two curse words that got him fired that day, and might have even ended his news reading career. Well, that’s what someone might expect, but instead this clip has catapulted him to internet fame, and even landed him on the Late Show with David Letterman.
“Boom Goes the Dynamite”
On 22 March, 2005 Brian Collins uttered one of the most legendary phrases in all of TV blooperdom. Filling in for a sports caster who had fallen ill, Collins managed to botch the segment so terribly that his line has even become a catchphrase on Family Guy. Probably the greatest test of fame, this line even has its own Wikipedia page.
Grape Lady Falls
It almost sounds like a scenic landmark. Someone asks what you did over the weekend, “Oh, I just went on a hike to Grape Lady Falls.” In some ways this clip is rather thought provoking. How did she manage to trip while running in place? Why were the buckets on the platform to begin with? How could she possibly make those sounds? Will all the king’s horses and all the king’s men be able to put her back together again?
Reporter in a Half Pipe
All of the best works make great use of dramatic irony, and this piece is no exception. The journalist is reporting on a skateboard camp that promotes safety in the sport, while he runs and dodges through a pack of children. Like a classic Greek tragedy, the reporter’s hubris leads to his own downfall and to the detriment of those around him. Perhaps the master touch is that of all the people he could have run into, he manages to knock over one of the few kids not wearing a helmet or pads.
“I Hate Iceland!”
The eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 was a pretty traumatic event for international travel. With thousands of flights cancelled, many people were stranded for days. Naturally, people were rather peeved, even if they didn’t let out their emotions. Fortunately, this man came along to say what everyone was thinking.
Russell Brand tears up MSNBC!
Funny man Russell Brand was on MSNC’s Morning Joe last month, and the gaggle of talking heads was a full-on hot mess interviewing the comedian. He was there to promote his upcoming Messiah Complex tour but instead the talk devolved into questioning why they couldn’t understand his accent and openly admitting they knew nothing about him. Brand remained a jovial sport, despite the complete lack of trying on the part of the anchors.
The Newsroom: The Complete First Season is released on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download 22 July from HBO Home Entertainment.
