Jamaican DogeSled -  the rise of cryptocurrency

Jamaican DogeSled -  the rise of cryptocurrency

Online currency is everywhere at the moment. Paving the way was the Bitcoin, which is now a major contender in the field of online payment, being worth around $822 at the time of writing.

Its success has opened doors for similar forms of online currency such as Litecoins and Namecoins and even paved the way for a meme based payment option, known as Dodgecoin.

While the Dogecoin is really unstable (it’s value isn’t constant), it’s already become popular after it hit the headlines a few days ago. Bear with us, it does sound like a bad movie plot…

So on Saturday the Sochi Olympic organisers announced that Jamaica had made the grade to compete in the winter Olympics, the only problem was their lack of funding – yes they entered the  Bobsleigh event, exactly like Cool Runnings (1993).

The founder of Dogecoin (inspired by the movie) then started up a collection to send the Jamaican team to Sochi. The movement has been nicknamed Dogesled!

In around two days, the month-old currency accumulated $30,000.

Compared to the mere $5,550 the team raised through their original campaign, I’d have to say that’s a pretty big win for crypto-currency.
