Interview: Until The Ribbon Breaks

Joe took a little time out of his holiday to talk to Until the Ribbon Breaks, a three piece from Cardiff.

Did you come up with the term agit-rap or was that something musicsphere came up with?

I can honestly say that I have never heard that term. I assume it means agitated rap, like nervous and bass, or anxiety 'n' roll. I have seen some strange genre descriptions of our music.

You recently offered your services to The Leftovers. How did that come about?

We made our music to moving images, so it makes sense to me that that’s where it has found its home. Especially on something like the leftovers, with its dystopian lean. Often these things are out of your control, they just (hopefully) happen in the background whilst you are busy making more.

I noticed you recently uploaded some YouTube videos onto your Tumblr where you re-score films. What inspired you to do this?

A love of film that is equal to a love of music. I think both forms accompany each other perfectly, each is better in the company of the other. I studied film-making in University, mainly editing. There are a lot of similarities in the creative process for me. Re- scoring others films, is both a tribute to the directors and the work and me wanting to score films before I have been asked to. Why wait?

How much did your upbringing in Wales have a part to play in your sound?

In as much as that my friends are from Wales. Music was handed down, punk and rap, that’s what skate kids listen to and that was my music. Cypress Hill, Mos Def, Rage against the Machine. It’s a beautiful landscape, but I just wanted to leave, to travel. Travel has been a huge inspiration.

Have you had any feedback from artists you've covered?

Covers, no. I'm not sure that Blondie has heard our cover. I would love to know what they thought. Our re-imaginations are different because we have been lucky enough to make them for artists we know and are fans of. I know that Sam (Smith) uses our version of Nirvana as part of his live show, things like that are always nice to find out.

Your collaboration with Run The Jewels was an amazing example of international link-ups. Who contacted who for this and what did the writing process entail?

I have been a fan of EL-P since I was 17 and now I'm lucky enough to call him a friend. It was a very natural process, I wrote and recorded a hook for the Run The Jewels record and when the time came to finish our album, I knew I wanted EL and Mike to jump on it. They are the nicest people working in music. Fact.

Are there any other international link-ups that you're excited to see? (I think Skepta and Kayne could do something special?)

Collaboration is so important. I don't think it happens enough. Kanye and Skepta feels a little safe. Two separate worlds colliding is what I like to see. It was amazing when Bon Iver, for instance, was popping up on Kanye's music.

How as Coachella?

Great, we have a band bucket list and that was definitely on it. It won't be the last time I'm sure

Were there any noticeable differences between the U.S crowd compared to a British one?

We have only played in the U.K a handful of times. I'd say that people everywhere are receptive to live music. It's an honest communication and one that is getting even more important I think.

What can we expect from your next album?

The unexpected.
