Friendly Fires: Inflorescent in Birmingham

Review

Friendly Fires—Ed Macfarlane, Edd Gibson and Jack Savidge—formed in 2006 before a pause in releases in 2014. Now they're back after a year of new singles 'Love Like Waves', 'Heaven Let Me In' and 'Silhouettes' as well as some celebratory comeback shows. Their long-awaited third studio album, Influroscent, was released on 16 August 2019 via Polydor. Back in July, they announced a European tour which kicked off in Oxford with an extra added date, followed by a performance at the 3,000-capacity Roundhouse in London before the trio headed to Birmingham O2 Institute on 1 November 2019.

Support began with a DJ set by Friend Within, who Friendly Fires named their 'finely moustached pal'. The band collaborated with Friend Within (aka Lee Mortimer) on 'Offline'. His mixes got the crowd warmed up and excited for the evening.

The pop duo APRE came after that with company—congrats to the bassist on the recent engagement! The pair had an unlikely start, they met at a London chess club! You may know 'Come Down' from FIFA 20, they dedicated that song on the night to EA Sports.

Friendly Fires rocked the small venue and filled the stage with conga drums, trumpets, keyboards and all sorts of percussion.

Fans were treated to an equal amount of new material from Inflorescent as well as old favourites such as 'Skeleton Boy', 'Jump in the Pool' and 'Paris'.

The crowd went wild for Ed's famous exotic dancing as he thrusted and samba'd his way up and down the stage to the many extended instrumentals.

Ed's energetic dancing certainly contributed to a party-like atmosphere! The final song was an extended version of 'Kiss of Life' which increased in tempo, much to the audience's delight as they tried to keep up with dancing.

The band then headed off to perform a DJ set at their afterparty at Mama Roux's. The tour continues with dates in Manchester, Dublin, Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam.
