Big Changes at Apple, what is it doing to its emojis?

Big Changes at Apple, what is it doing to its emojis?

After complaints that the original list of “characters” didn’t contain enough ethnic images, Apple has said that they will be working on more with the body that controls them.

Currently, outside of the generic yellow smiley, almost all people in the character list are white. The two characters that aren’t, according to an online petition “are a guy who looks vaguely Asian and another in a turban”.

The keyboard already offers graphics depicting same sex couples, and so users have been calling on Apple to include characters of different racial backgrounds.

Even Miley is getting on the diversity hype.

As the images have to work across different devices, they are strictly regulated by the Unicode Consortium. The existing emoji templates are based on their standard in order to be used by all modern devices.
