Where are the UK’s most LGBT-friendly universities?

A friendly setting is of major importance to many prospective students when choosing a university to study at, especially for those in the LGBT community.

It is a good thing, then, that Stonewall’s Gay By Degree project has released findings that has sought to find the most gay-welcome universities in the UK.

In compiling the list, the team worked through a checklist of considerations to determine how friendly each institution is. These were as follows:

Anti-homophobic bullying policy and mandatory training

Student sexual orientation monitoring

Explicit welfare support and info for LGB students

Society for LGBT students

Events for LGB students

Consultation with LGB students

Specific career advice for LGB students

LGBT Staff Network

Stonewall Diversity Champion

Engagement with the wider community

Leading the charge were six universities that managed to score highly in every criteria. These were: Cardiff University, Liverpool John Moores University, Sheffield Hallam University, University of Essex, University of Glasgow and York St John University.

This is a step up from last year’s results when only two universities (Cardiff University and Liverpool John Moores University) managed to perform so highly.

Stonewall Chief Executive of Stonewall, Ruth Hunt has said of the findings: “There are a record number of university places available this year and prospective students who are lesbian, gay or bisexual will want to study where they will be supported and developed.

This is of course as important as ever seeing as tuition fees are the highest they have ever been.

Heaping praise on the universities that ranked so highly in the report, Hunt said: “Particular congratulations are due to Cardiff University, University of Essex, University of Glasgow, Liverpool John Moores University, Sheffield Hallam University and York St John University for being the only universities in Britain to score full marks.”
