Super sleek hair using household items

Get hair in tip-top condition with these top tips.

There are many fancy (and occasionally expensive) hair care products that claim to strengthen hair and increase shine. But there are cheaper alternatives to these products and some can even be found in the home, making them super convenient.

  1. Mayonnaise. Sounds weird but eggs and olive oil deep condition hair. Apply onto wet hair until thoroughly coated, put a shower cap on and leave for 20 minutes, then wash out.

  1. Rinse your hair with cold water. After shampooing and conditioning hair normally, finish off by giving your hair a cold rinse, then dry and style as usual. This closes the hair cuticle, making hair smoother, shinier and healthier looking.

  1. Avocado can help improve the condition of dull and damaged hair. Mash a ripe avocado, add two teaspoons of olive oil and stir until creamy. Apply to hair evenly and leave for 20 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly and wash out with shampoo.

  1. Vigorously towel and blow drying can damage hair and cause it to dry out. Instead blot hair dry with a towel to remove excess moisture, comb through and then leave to dry naturally.

  1. This one is more specific to curly or wavy hair. Instead of brushing or combing through hair when damp, detangle with your fingers. This prevents breakage and also keeps the curls intact.

  1. Beer. This is a way to increase volume and shine for your hair. Start by shampooing hair as normal, coat hair with beer and rinse out, then condition as normal.

  1. Lemon juice can be helpful in removing product build up and increasing the shine of your hair. Simply rinse your hair with lemon juice after shampooing and conditioning and then have a final water rinse.

  1. Finally, olive oil in general is beneficial for hair, especially for those with frizz prone hair.  Apply a small amount to hair to improve appearance and also strengthen it.
