Summer healthcare kit!

Summer healthcare kit!

Look after yourself this summer with these top tips!

Whether you are heading overseas this summer, or praying for a UK bright spell, the hot-time-hazards are out there, so be prepared!
From dehydration to sunburn, stings to silly accidents, getting ahead of the game will save you time, money and pain.

Kit basics

Before you embark on your summer of fun, pop down to your local Boots store and stock up on essentials. This will depend on your destination, but as a rule these products will always come in handy:

Boots non-drowsy Hayfever and allergy relief

Not only covering hayfever, these tablets treat a range of allergic reactions which may flare up due to a new environment, and are non-drowsy. If you do suffer from hayfever remember these top tips: wash your hair before bedtime, as pollen can collect here and smear your nostrils with Vaseline to prevent excessive pollen inhalation. Buy from Boots, £8.49.

Insect Repellent Spray

Prevention is the best cure guys, so before you head off to somewhere hot and sunny invest in some good insect repellent. It will save you a world of irritation and unsightly bites! If you are popular with our winged amigos, buy antihistamine tablets and a bite cream for quick relief. Purchase from Boots, £6.45.

Sun, Swim and Gym Shampoo

In the summertime it’s not just our immediate health which can suffer; our hair is also at risk of damage due to bright sunlight, sea water and sweat. This shampoo from Boots gently cleanses all the bad stuff from locks and leaves hair silky smooth. Follow up with an intensive conditioner. From Boots, £3.05.

Soltan Lotion SPF50

You may be thinking that SPF 50 is a little high, but after an afternoon of baking in the sun, you’ll soon appreciate the benefits of precautionary skin care. Most of the sun’s damage is unseen, and will only appear as you age. So, to avoid looking like a turtle by 50, wear factor 50! It’s simple! ;) Boots, £4.49.

Soltan Aftersun, Soothing Gel with Aloe Vera

If you haven’t heeded our advice and head back to your hotel an unfortunate shade of lobster, make sure you drink plenty of water and slap on this aftersun. Store it in the fridge for extra cooling relief, and steer clear of direct sunlight until your burns subside. Buy online, £2.99.

Headache and Upset Stomach Relief

Food poisoning, an upset stomach, or dare we say, a rotten hangover, feature in many holidays, especially when journeying to far flung parts of the world with unfamiliar cuisine. To lessen your symptoms and curtail a call to the doctor, knock back one of these sachets. They contain some essential minerals and are designed to get you back on your feet. Available at Boots, £1.55.

Backup plan

Health insurance is actively encouraged, and jetting off with no cover whatsoever is foolhardy to say the least. Medical travel insurance isn’t as expensive as you may think. For a quote and expert guidance, check out MoneySupermarket’s feature.

If travelling in Europe then an EHIC card is essential. It will cover state medical treatment in your host country, but it is not a substitute for travel insurance. For more details visit the dedicated NHS website.

All that remains is to have a great time, safe in the knowledge that if something does go wrong, you are prepared!
