The owner of TY Beanie Babies narrowly avoided jail time today for tax evasion. Ty Warner was sentenced to two years’ probation and 500 hours of community service in Chicago court, which is nothing compared to the 5 years inside he could have faced.

Pleading guilty to hiding $25 million (£15 million) in a secret off shore account really made me wonder how popular these Beanies were – and how they made so much money. The trend seemed to take off during the mid-90’s, with trading these coloured-cuddlers with my school friends being a huge part of my childhood.

With the memory of our cuddly, bean-filled friends (and a little 90’s nostalgia) spurring me on, I decided to have a look at the value of some of the rarer Beanies today. Boy, was I surprized at what I found…
