Working on a temporary basis during your studies can be the the key to setting yourself up for your working life after university.
Over the last 10 years it has become increasingly difficult to source that all-important first job after graduation. With so many new graduates completing their studies each year and a reduction in the number of places available, it has become challenging to differentiate yourself from other candidates. It is also common knowledge that the future rise in tuition fees is going to have a huge impact on the overall cost of attending University.
However, it is not all bad news. Over the last 10 years, student-focused recruitment agencies like Unitemps have emerged. Their primary focus is to try and help students obtain work whilst you are at University.
Unitemps student recruitment
Unitemps was established by the University of Warwick back in 1996 as its own recruitment company and has since grown to become a four branch operation (University of Warwick, Birmingham City University, University of Nottingham and University of Surrey) with two more pencilled in for later this year.
How does it work?
The company source roles from both universities and external companies creating a wide variety of different roles: you could work as an event steward for the weekend; as an administrator 2 days a week or even more bizarre roles like working as a simulated patient in a medical school for 4 hours.
The best thing about these new breed of recruiters is that the majority of the work sourced is brought in with students in mind which excellent for gaining vital experience around your studies and also assist in making the burden of tutorial fees that little bit more bearable.
Student recruitment agencies usually have flexible, short term temporary work with no need to make long-term commitments, making it easy to fit the work around your studies.
Long-term employment
They also have longer term contracts if you are interested in sustaining the same role throughout your University career.
The pay rates also tend to be in line with what you would get paid if you worked for a university directly; even basic entry level roles like mailing assistants attract salaries of £7 - £8 per hour.
Not only does working temporary help make your studies more affordable it also helps you gain vital work experience that you can add to your CV, which will be useful come graduation time.
