Why Not Study Abroad While in London
With many English students choosing to complete their undergraduate education in the US, Florida State University, one of America’s oldest top research universities, has responded to this interest by creating a program whereby UK students can join the university through one of its European campuses. Upon successful completion of the first year, students transfer to the US campus for the remainder of their degree. Through this opportunity UK students can enjoy all of the benefits of an undergraduate education comparable in both academic rigor and cost to that available in the UK.

Waiting until the second year of their degree before deciding in which discipline to concentrate, as is the norm in the US, allows students to craft a degree very much around their individual talents. This opportunity will be of particular interest both to students eager to combine their university career with a study-abroad experience and to students keen to embrace the diversity and strength of a U.S degree. Furthermore, graduating from FSU entitles UK students to work in the US for up to two years and will surely enhance students’ employment prospects in the UK and EU by demonstrating independence, flexibility and maturity.

With ever-increasing competition for university places in the UK, this course provides an alternative path to university for those students wishing to secure a place for 2012. In line with the US admissions cycle, the FSU International Gateway Program will be offering places (subject to results) from November 2011 for entry in Fall 2012. This timing will allow UK students to begin their university in step with UK-bound peers while avoiding the rush of Clearing.

Students also have the advantage of living and studying with the American students with whom they will share the campus when continuing studies in Florida. In addition, as a part of the first-year European curriculum, UK students will be guided through the SAT and visa application process so that they are ready to transfer to the US campus for their second year.
Each of the FSU campuses is located in the heart of the city. The FSU London Centre Campus, for example, is located in Bloomsbury, a stone’s throw from the British Museum. Students may live either on campus in self-catering shared flats or, with University approval, off-campus. University fees for the academic year 2012-13 are £9,400 while housing fees are £7,200. Annual tuition fees at the Florida campus are currently around £12,500.

Those wishing to find out more about FSU and the opportunities available may find it helpful to attend the London campus Open Day (Wednesday October 12 1pm-3pm; 6pm to 8pm). Designed to provide a ‘taste’ of US campus life by meeting current students and faculty, it promises to showcase a little piece of the Sunshine State in the heart of London.
