YouTube and Disney strike deal

Films to be made available to watch on YouTube

YouTube is to make Disney's library of films available on its new movie rental site.

Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean: on Stranger Tides and Cars 2 will be among the films initially available. Later, classics such as Snow White are expected to be added to the catalogue available online, the Guardian reported.

Disney Interactive will produce the ‘family-friendly’ online channel, to be available on both Disney.com and YouTube.

The move is seen as part of YouTube’s ongoing bid to present itself as the number one destination for video.

The market is already competitive with LoveFilm's streaming service already signing up to show Disney films and US giant Netflix launching in the UK and Ireland next year.

"Even more of the great Disney classics and new releases will be added in weeks to come, including our YouTube Movie Extras with behind-the-scenes clips, interviews and more,” said spokeswoman Minjae Ormes.

The company, bought by Google in 2006 for $1.65bn, launched its film rental site in May.
