Five minutes with: The Saturdays

The Student Guide’s Emma Godden spoke to Rochelle from The Saturdays about their new single, album and upcoming tour

Congratulations on the new single, My Heart Takes Over – what has the response been like so far?

It’s going really well. People haven’t seen the video yet, but it’s been played a lot on the radio, and things seem to be really good.

Is it going to be the big number one?

It’s not really about that anymore. It’s going to be a tough week, there are a lot of big artists out there at the moment. We’re really just focusing on our album in the lead up to Christmas, and getting big sales for that.

The new single is quite different to the two singles you’ve already released off the album (Notorious and All Fired Up), both of which were quite R’n’B fuelled and dancey.  What can we expect from the new album in terms of the overall sound?

It’s a proper album. We make pop music, so ballads, dance tracks, pop songs – it’s an all round album.

Is there a song on the new album that you’re most looking forward to performing on your tour in December?

There are quite a few actually. There’s a song called Promise Me, which is quite dancey, which I really like. There’s also another called Last Call, which is another favourite.

Which girlband do you most aspire to be like?

We love the Spice Girls, they’re absolute legends. I’ve always been a huge fan of Destiny’s Child, and Girls Aloud are huge. It’s not just about girl bands though, we’ve been and are inspired by loads of different artists.

You filmed the video for the new single in Iceland – why did you choose this location, and what was it like filming the video?

We wanted somewhere emotional, raw and cold to suit the song, so Iceland was perfect. Filming the video was hard work, outside in the snow – it wasn’t at all glamorous.

In the video you’re wearing lots of coats and scarves. Which autumn/winter 2011 fashion trends are you most excited about?

I really like printed stuff. There is so much about at the moment, like bird prints and patterns – it’s all so different.

Una Healy recently announced that she’s pregnant. Congratulations, how is it going to affect your music?

It’s not going to affect the music. People keep asking us the same questions, she’s pregnant, it’s not an illness! There are loads of working mums out there in the industry. Music is our job, so it won’t stop that. In fact, it will add to it, we’re really looking forward to having a new member in the band.

We’ve been following you on Twitter, and see that you’ve been keeping up with this year’s X Factor. Who is your favourite to win?

I think Frankie will win – with a hoard of screaming girls to back you, it can’t be bad. Girls will definitely vote for him, so I think he’ll probably win.
Having said that, I think the Girls and the Groups are the strongest categories this year.

Who do you think is the most controversial contestant?

Well, Kitty claims she is. She preaches a lot about being really controversial and different, but I don’t think she is.
I actually think Mischa is the most controversial, in everything from her sense of fashion to how she goes out there and twists up songs. I think she’s great.

You’ve recently been involved in Marie Curie’s Big Build Appeal, how did that come about?

Marie Curie is our charity of choice as a band. We do everything we can to help out and get involved. We already do a lot of work for them, so helping to rebuild the hospice was natural for us.
We went on a trip to see the old hospice, and it was clearly in need of rebuilding, so we helped lay some bricks for the new construction, and continue to offer our support.
